Portland Thorns make Sophia Smith first teen drafted in NWSL history

Former Stanford star and U.S Olympic hopeful Sophia Smith was taken as the NWSL's top overall pick by the Portland Thorns.

Eager to begin her professional career after leaving Stanford following her sophomore season, Sophia Smith wasted no time making history in the National Women's Soccer League draft.

Selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Portland Thorns, the 19-year-old Smith is the first teenager drafted in league history.

After frenzied trading that saw the second, third and fourth picks change hands on draft day, the Thorns also moved up to select Washington State forward Morgan Weaver with the No. 2 pick.

The Portland Thorns acquired the No. 1 pick in next week's National Women's Soccer League college entry draft from the Orlando Pride, sparking new intrigue in what had been viewed as a potentially lackluster event.

The Thorns sent the Pride defender Emily Sonnett, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 and a World Cup winner with the United States last summer, as well as the rights to Australian international Caitlin Foord and their own first- and second-round picks in the upcoming draft.

Reign FC and Lyon parent company OL Groupe announced Thursday that the two sides have agreed to terms on the purchase of the National Women's Soccer League club.

OL Groupe will pay $3.51 million for the American club's assets, pending approval of the NWSL board of directors. The French company announced its intention to negotiate a deal last month. It becomes the first international majority ownership group in a league that began play in 2013.

The parent company of French football club Olympique Lyonnais is in exclusive talks to purchase Reign FC of the National Women's Soccer League.

The OL Groupe and the Reign announced the deal on Monday and the transaction is expected to be completed on Jan. 31.
