Zimbabwe can remain optimistic despite Afcon disaster

HARARE, Zimbabwe -- Failure and heartbreak have long been familiar themes in Zimbabwean football, and it was perhaps inevitable that the Warriors' 2019 Africa Cup of Nations campaign would end in despair.

The Southern Africans flew to Egypt amid a rising tide of optimism after some encouraging displays in the qualifiers only to return home a miserable lot, with a 4-0 defeat by Democratic Republic of Congo ensuring an inglorious end to the dream of a first ever appearance in the knockout stages.

Alec Mudimu: From Welsh Premier League to stopping Mohamed Salah at Afcon

CAIRO -- Alec Mudimu believes he "learned a lifetime's work" during Zimbabwe's Africa Cup of Nations opener on Friday, as the Cefn Druids defender swapped the Welsh Premier League for a showdown with Mohamed Salah and Egypt.

The Warriors ultimately fell to a 1-0 defeat following Trezeguet's 41st-minute winner in front of 75,000 spectators at Cairo International Stadium, but Mudimu is taking plenty of positives from the performance after testing himself against Salah only three weeks after...

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League: Platinum look to wrap up title at Maglas

The small town of Zvishavane could rock to the sound of title celebrations once more on Sunday as FC Platinum face already relegated Shabanie Mine needing just a draw to make it back-to-back Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League title triumphs.

Platinum have amassed 71 points, nine more than second-placed Ngezi Platinum going into the last three matches of the campaign, and they are expected to easily dispatch ailing derby rivals Shabanie in this weekend's round of fixtures.

While the bottom-placed asbestos...

Nakamba, Karuru, back for Zimbabwe ahead of Congo clash

Zimbabwe coach Sunday Chidzambwa has recalled midfielders Marvellous Nakamba and Ovidy Karuru for next month's double header against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Also included in the 23-man squad announced on Wednesday is Nottingham Forest right-back Tendayi Darikwa who looks set to finally secure his long-awaited Zimbabwean passport.

Zimbabwe play the DRC in Kinshasa on 10 October before hosting the return leg in Harare three days later....

Ngezi compound CAPS woes, Dynamos win

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League pacesetters Ngezi Platinum Stars stretched their lead at the top to three points following a comeback 2-1 win over CAPS United at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.

Ngezi had not beaten CAPS in competitive football since being promoted to the topflight in 2016, and it looked as though that curse would continue after John Zhuwawo handed the hosts the lead with a deflected half-volley just before the half-hour mark.

It was only the third goal Ngezi have conceded...
