Vietnam's V.League 1 to resume on June 5 with all-new playoff format

Top-flight football will return to Vietnam on June 5 as the V.League 1 resumes competition, but with a revised playoff format to accommodate for the coronavirus pandemic.

Unlike many competitions in Asia, the V.League 1 managed to kick off the 2020 campaign earlier this year -- albeit behind closed doors -- and played two rounds of fixtures before bringing a halt to proceedings as the pandemic exacerbated.

Nonetheless, the VPF (Vietnamese Professional Football) has since announced a resumption on...

Vietnam coach ready to fight Thailand assistant over apparent height insult

Park Hang-seo has been a success since taking charge of Vietnam in 2017.

Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo told Thailand assistant Sasa Todic he was ready to fight him following an apparent insult about his height following a World Cup qualifier.

The touchline row was sparked at the end of Tuesday's draw between Vietnam and Thailand in Hanoi. Park shook hands with his opposite number Akira Nishino at full-time in front of 40,000 fans.

Meanwhile, Todic, a former goalkeeper from Serbia, was grinning and made a gesture with his hand level with his chest, leading to the South...

Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines can learn from Vietnam's remarkable rise

On Sunday, the Golden Stars defeated Jordan on penalties to move into the last eight of the 2019 Asian Cup. A showdown now awaits with heavyweights Japan on Thursday. An upset couldn't happen, could it?

To defeat the Samurai Blue would probably be...

The Asian Cup is considered the World Cup for Asian nations, and one can see a glimpse of that in the playing styles on display. The West Asian nations (Saudi Arabia, Iran) are tough, rugged and play a fairly physical game, while those from further east (China, South Korea) are quick, technical and extremely clever at controlling the tempo in games. Then there are teams like India, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines and Turkmenistan, who are either all on debut or returning to this tournament after a...

Thousands celebrate Vietnam's AFF Cup triumph over Malaysia

Football fever gripped Vietnam again on Saturday night as thousands of fans flocked to the streets of the capital Hanoi to celebrate their country's victory over Malaysia in the AFF Cup final.

Nguyen Anh Duc's sixth minute volley secured a first regional title since 2008 for Vietnam and after the final whistle the streets around the My Dinh Stadium were soon teeming with flag-waving fans.

The supporters lit flares, waved national flags, blew vuvuzelas and honked car horns in a party atmosphere,...
