The Raul Jimenez effect: Wolves fans embrace Mexican wrestling, sell masks for charity

Wolves fans of all backgrounds have embraced the culture and traditions of their new striker, culminating in an inventive fundraiser. Singh Kang is second from left.

WOLVERHAMPTON, England -- Wolves fans Manny Singh Kang and Jason Guy didn't know much about lucha libre or Mexican wrestling masks before Raul Jimenez joined the club. But interest in the sport was piqued by the Mexican striker's celebration in the FA Cup semifinal against Watford, when he scored the opening goal and donned the mask created by his wrestler friend Sin Cara.

"Let's be honest: none of Wolverhampton was exactly an expert on lucha libre," said Singh Kang, talking to ESPN before a...

The draw for the CONCACAF Gold Cup did the U.S. men's national team no favors.

The 2019 tournament sees the field expanded to 16 nations for the first time. This has served to dilute the pool of teams, but the relative strength of the groups has proved to be uneven. Costa Rica should cruise through, and Mexico should have its way as well. As for the U.S., it will face Guyana, Trinidad &...

Inside Mexico's first camp under 'Tata' Martino, and El Tri's mission to win back respect

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- There was one phrase that seemed to set the tone for Gerardo "Tata" Martino's first Mexico camp: When the Argentine declared, "My obligation as Mexico head coach is to make the national team be respected."

Martino said that ahead of Friday's 3-1 victory over Chile in San Diego and the idea extended through Tuesday's 4-2 win against Paraguay in Levi's Stadium. In fact, the phrase could be the overriding mantra for Martino's cycle in charge leading to Qatar 2022 --...

Mexico coach 'Tata' Martino takes ball to the face from Paraguay boss's boot

Mexico coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino praised Eduardo Berizzo's 'very good left foot' after taking a ball to the face.

Mexico cantered to a 4-2 victory over Paraguay in an international friendly match on Tuesday, though the victors didn't emerge from the encounter entirely unscathed.

Unusually however, it was El Tri's head coach Gerardo "Tata" Martino who ended the game nursing a war wound inflicted by the hand -- or should we say foot -- of his opposite number, Paraguay coach Eduardo Berizzo.

At one point, Berizzo kicked an errant ball that rolled over the touchline but unfortunately skewed his shot directly into...

Jonathan dos Santos, Javier Hernandez take charge in Mexico's win over Paraguay

Jonathan dos Santos was Mexico's standout player as El Tri defeated Paraguay 4-2 on Tuesday.

Mexico manager Gerardo "Tata" Martino is now two for two in his new tenure with El Tri. Following last week's 3-1 victory over Chile, the Argentine helped lead Mexico to a dramatic 4-2 win against Paraguay on Tuesday night.

Here are a few things we learned from El Tri's latest result:

Positives

In match that featured plenty of backups for Mexico, a number of midfield options stepped up and made a case for themselves in the new Mexico era under Martino. Names like Erick Gutierrez, Edson Alvarez and...
