Wilfried Zaha reacts during Ivory Coasts' Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal loss to Algeria.
Wilfried Zaha's luck ran out as Ivory Coast were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations by Algeria.

SUEZ, Egypt -- A single kick can make the difference between a summer of glory and one of doubt. When Serey Die stepped up to take Ivory Coast's fifth penalty, knowing he had to score after Youcef Belaili's miss had given Les Elephants a reprieve, the watching Wilfried Zaha might have felt particularly inclined to say a prayer.

Zaha's work had long since been done here; he had set up a second-half equaliser for Jonathan Kodjia with a blistering run before being sacrificed for Maxwel Cornet's fresher...

Zaha, who had barely featured in the match until that point, took advantage as the Mali got into a terrible mess from an Ivory Coast goal kick in the 76th minute to earn his side a barely deserved win and quarter-final tie against Algeria.

Serey Die: Unsung hero of Ivory Coast's post-Golden Generation

CAIRO, Egypt -- It was June 19, 2014, when Geoffroy Serey Die truly introduced himself to a broader footballing audience, although he didn't make his mark due to his on-field qualities.

The event was Ivory Coast's second World Cup Group C match against Colombia, and Serey Die claimed the headlines when the Elephants lined up to sing their national anthem L'Abidjanaise -- a canticle to fraternity -- in Brasilia.

Serey Die was completely overcome with emotion -- sobbing, then weeping -- as he and...
