Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny thought Diego Costa ended World Cup dream

France coach Didier Deschamps explains why Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette didn't make his World Cup squad.

Arsenal's Laurent Koscielny says he initially thought the injury that will keep him out of this summer's World Cup came from a Diego Costa tackle.

France defender Koscielny, 32, ruptured his Achilles' tendon during the Gunners' away defeat to Atletico Madrid in their Europa League semifinal second leg at the start of May.

"When I fell, I thought it was because [Diego] Costa had tackled me," Koscielny told the French Football Federation (FFF) website.

Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot "has made a huge mistake" in refusing to be a World Cup standby player, says France manager Didier Deschamps.
France coach Didier Deschamps explains why Anthony Martial and Alexandre Lacazette didn't make his World Cup squad.
ESPN FC's Julien Laurens says Didier Deschamps must get it right with the tremendous amount of talent available to him on the France squad.
Twenty years after winning the 1998 World Cup, the ESPN panel feel Didier Deschamps' man management will be crucial for France's World Cup hopes.

CLAIREFONTAINE-EN-YVELINES, France -- France coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed that Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot has refused a role as a reserve for this summer's World Cup and branded the 23-year-old's decision "a massive mistake."

Rabiot notified Deschamps on Monday that after failing to make the 23-man squad for the trip to Russia, he does not want to spend his summer waiting in hope for a call to arms in Eastern Europe.

Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot at early crossroads for club and country

Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot and Kevin Trapp were happy that their superstar teammate Neymar was able to join the club that won Coupe de France on Tuesday night, and they believe the Brazilian will stay at PSG.
Despite winning all they could domestically, Paris Saint Germain's Champions League failure still denies them elite status in Europe.

PARIS -- When France coach Didier Deschamps unveiled his 23-man World Cup squad Thursday, one of the biggest talking points was his decision to demote Paris Saint-Germain's Adrien Rabiot to the reserve list.

Club teammates Alphonse Areola, Presnel Kimpembe and Kylian Mbappe were all selected, but Rabiot did not make the full cut despite arguably being the second-most-established name on that list of four.

If you have been watching PSG regularly in 2018, though, particularly since the 3-1 defeat...

Michel Platini: 1998 World Cup draw 'trickery' influenced draw

Michel Platini left his role as UEFA president in 2015.
Michel Platini has spoken out about the 1998 World Cup draw.

Michel Platini has admitted he "did a little trickery" with the 1998 World Cup group stage draw to try and ensure hosts France and reigning champions Brazil would fulfil "everyone's dream" by meeting in the final.

Platini was a co-organiser of the 1998 tournament along with late French Football Federation president Fernand Sastre.

The former UEFA President told France Bleu he had had a hand in ensuring France and Brazil would not meet before the final if both qualified top of their sections in...
