PSG defend fans barred from Chelsea clash

UEFA Champions League

Gianluigi Buffon 'is not suited to PSG' - former goalkeeper Bernard Lama

Shaka Hislop explains why PSG's signing of legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon does nothing to help their Champions League ambitions.

Former Paris Saint-Germain and France goalkeeper Bernard Lama said he is worried by the club's decision to sign Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus on a free transfer.

Lama, speaking with France Football, voiced his concerns -- even though he recognises the experience and winning attitude that Buffon brings to the table.

"First of all, PSG have recruited a great champion in Gianluigi," Lama said. "His profile worries me, though, as he is not suited to PSG -- namely in terms of possession and playing high up the pitch.

"To play this way, you need a goalkeeper who pushes up. This is not Buffon's style. He never played that way in Italy. Plus, his ability with the ball at his feet is average. Also, Juventus did not offer him a new contract. ... [But] PSG wanted a dressing room boss, so in that respect, it is a good move -- especially on a free."

Lama, 55, won Ligue 1 once, the Coupe de France twice and one Cup Winners' Cup with PSG over an eight-year period spanning two separate spells at the Parc des Princes and won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 with France.

He also expressed his doubts over Alphonse Areola's future with the club after Buffon's signing.

"Alphonse needs to decide if he wants to be second choice to a serial winner or to go elsewhere," Lama said. "That said, I cannot imagine him going much higher -- it is also a question of character."

Buffon has spoken of his child-like enthusiasm for his new challenge with PSG, who also have keeper Kevin Trapp under contract.
