South Sudan's World Cup dreams end in African qualifying

South Sudan's first World Cup qualifying campaign ended early following a 4-0 defeat at Mauritania on Tuesday.

Moulaye Khalil and Boubacar Beyguili had already scored for the hosts before Aluck Akeuch Deng's 79th-minute red card for the new nation, and Moussa Samba Moussa and Ismail Diakite completed the rout.

Mauritania won 5-1 on aggregate and advance to face Tunisia in the second round of qualifying in November.

Chad advanced on away goals despite a 2-1 defeat at Sierra Leone, a team 54 places ahead of them in the FIFA ranking.

Esaie Djikoloum's goal on the stroke of half-time was enough for Chad, who later conceded goals to Al-Hadji Kamara and Abdul Sesay.

Chad will face Egypt in the next round without Constant Madtoingue, who was sent off in stoppage time.

In another upset, Comoros advanced on away goals following a 1-1 draw at Lesotho, Mohamed M'Changama finding the crucial goal in the 73rd minute after Tsepo Seturumane's opener for Lesotho.

Ghana await Comoros, the lowest-ranked side to advance at 193rd in the FIFA rankings.

Namibia rallied to defeat Gambia 2-1 to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

Despite Pa Amat Dibba's opener for the Gambia, Willy Stephanus and Hendrik Somaeb scored for the home side as Namibia will face Guinea in round two.

Botswana defeated minnows Eritrea 3-1 with two goals by Mogakolodi Ngele and another from Joel Mogorosi. Mali are next for Botswana, who won 5-1 on aggregate.

Moussa Maazou and Mahamane Cisse both scored twice to help Niger defeat Somalia 4-0, advancing 6-0 on aggregate with Cameroon waiting in the next round.

Burundi saw off Seychelles with a 2-0 win to move on 3-0 on aggregate, Fiston Abdul Razak scoring twice. DR Congo are next for Burundi.

William Jebor scored a hat trick to boost Liberia to a 3-1 win at Guinea-Bissau, ensuring they advance to face Ivory Coast after winning 4-2 on aggregate.

Madagascar managed a 2-2 draw against Central African Republic to move on 5-2 on aggregate. Falimery Ramanamahefa and Anicet Abel scored for the hosts to set up a second-round tie against Senegal.

Djibouti's home leg against Swaziland was postponed "due to logistical reasons," FIFA said, though the visitors are likely to advance to face Nigeria after winning the first leg 6-0.

Three teams advanced after winning on Sunday. Ethiopia will face Congo, Kenya are up against Cape Verde, while Tanzania must play Algeria.
