In Group 5, for example, either Colombia's Santa Fe or The Strongest of Bolivia will join Santos of Brazil in the knockout phase. The two teams meet in Bogota on Tuesday. Santa Fe need to win. A draw is good enough for The Strongest. But the Bolivians...

Chapecoense visited the site of November's crash ahead of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional.

Chapecoense face expulsion from the Copa Libertadores after starting an allegedly ineligible player on Wednesday.

Luiz Otavio was sent off for the tragedy-hit Brazilian club in their previous Copa game, a 3-0 loss to Nacional, triggering a suspension.

But Chapecoense, believing the suspension had been served when Otavio sat out the second leg of the Recopa Sudamericana against Atletico Nacional, started the defender for the Copa match against Lanus.

Otavio scored the winning goal in the 88th minute...

Vinicius Junior saga highlights present state of South American club soccer

Sid Lowe explains how Real's signing of Vinicius Junior demonstrates their strategy of signing star prospects early on.
Real Madrid's newly signed 16-year-old Vinicius Junior hopes to mature over the next couple years before joining Los Blancos.
Flamengo exited the Copa Libertadores early again, as they were unable to hold off San Lorenzo.

Everything seemed to be going so well.

Inside the last 20 minutes, Rio de Janeiro giants Flamengo were a goal up in their final Copa Libertadores group game away to San Lorenzo of Argentina. At that point, they would make it through to the knockout stage even in defeat. For Flamengo to suffer early elimination, they had to lose and fellow Brazilians Atletico Paranaense had to win away to Universidad Catolica of Chile.

In a game that kicked off at the same time, Catolica were a goal ahead. Something...
