The Newcastle Jets earn a vital point at the bottom of the table in a 1-1 draw vs. Western Sydney Wanderers.

Newcastle showed plenty of character in their first A-League match under new coach Carl Robinson, fighting back to earn a 1-1 draw at Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

The Jets fell behind to a fifth-minute penalty from Wanderers' captain Mitchell Duke at Bankwest Stadium, and could have been three down by the 15th. But they gradually battled their way back and created several chances before Matt Millar beat goalkeeper Daniel Lopar at his near post with a fierce drive in the 75th minute.

Western Sydney Wanderers scored their first win under caretaker coach Jean Paul de Marigny with a 3-1 victory over Central Coast Mariners.

The Wanderers went into the sheds up 1-0 at half-time but a penalty kick for each team ramped up the intensity in the second half. Mariners skipper Tommy Oar gave away a crucial penalty in...

Sacked Western Sydney Wanderers boss Babbel slams 'weak' A-League, referees

Markus Babbel
Former Wanderers boss Markus Babbel has been highly critical of A-League standards and referees.

Sacked Western Sydney coach Markus Babbel says referee standards are incredibly bad in a "weak" A-League.

Babbel, who was axed as the Wanderers' coach on Jan. 20, has launched a scathing attack on the A-League in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

Babbel was cited twice last December and fined by Football Federation Australia for making critical comments about referees.

"What is going on here is gambling under the open sky," he told the newspaper. "I was stolen eight points this season, it...
