Brett Pitman scored a late penalty to save a point for Portsmouth in a 1-1 draw with Walsall at Fratton Park.

The away team took the lead two minutes after half-time when Luke Leahy was able to slot home a James Wilson cross.

The lead was cancelled out when Pitman's poweful penalty beat the outstretching arms of Mark Gillespie.

Walsall captain Adam Chambers was lucky to stay on the pitch after his reckless tackle on Portsmouth's Adam May in the second minute and had the home fans calling for a red card.

Oxford made it two wins from two at the start of their League One campaign by beating Portsmouth 3-0 at the Kassam Stadium.

Wes Thomas and Josh Ruffels were on target for the second week running, having both bagged in Oxford's season-opening victory at Oldham last week, while Gino van Kessel scored a brilliant individual goal.

It was the visitors who had the first sight at goal when Kyle Bennett tried his luck from 20 yards, which Simon Eastwood parried for a corner.

Pompey had won the last cup meeting between the two sides on the biggest stage of all and looked as if they might repeat that triumph when Bluebirds captain Sean Morrison scored a 32nd-minute own goal.

But substitute Nathaniel Mendez-Laing equalised before Greg Halford's 113th-minute strike prevented a penalty shoot-out.

New Portsmouth owner Michael Eisner was in the stands to watch his side get off to a dream start after beating 10-man Rochdale 2-0 at Fratton Park.

The visitors started brightly and their first chance fell to Oliver Rathbone, who tried his luck from outside the area but saw his effort sail over the bar.

Rochdale's Keith Keane was given a straight red card by referee Lee Probert in the 21st minute after fouling Conor Chaplin when the striker ran through on goal.
