A-League star given leave to pursue rap career

Western United FC show a glimpse of the preparations going into their debut season in the A-League.

Joe Champness is determined to prove a football pitch isn't the only place where he's on-song.

The Newcastle Jets winger and aspiring hip-hop artist has been granted indefinite leave to fulfil his musical ambitions in the United States.

- Robbie Fowler begins Brisbane career with a win
- A-League fixture: Melbourne Derby to open season

Although Champness has a three-year deal with the A-League club, the 22-year-old will instead spend an extended period in Los Angeles. Champness had already missed...

FFA Cup: Fowler to make coaching debut vs. Sydney FC

The first competitive match of Robbie Fowler's Brisbane Roar reign will be an FFA Cup clash away at A-League champions Sydney FC.

The Liverpool legend, who is embarking on the first full-time head coaching role of his storied career, will take the Roar to face Steve Corica's Sky Blues in a round-of-32 clash after the pair were drawn together on Wednesday.

It will be Fowler's first big challenge at the helm of the new-look Roar who have shipped out 16 players following their disastrous 2018-19 A-League...

O'Donovan confirmed as Fowler's first Roar signing

ESPN FC's Alejandro Moreno sifts through the latest transfer rumours, including where Matthijs de Ligt will land in the summer transfer window.

Robbie Fowler has begun his rebuild of Brisbane Roar with the arrival of ex-Newcastle Jets striker Roy O'Donovan on a two-year deal.

O'Donovan, 33, joins the Roar after two A-League seasons with the Jets including the 2018 Grand Final defeat to Melbourne Victory.

That loss also featured a red card for O'Donovan for a high challenge on Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas which resulted in a 10-game suspension for the Irishman.

Prior to being at the Jets, O'Donovan spent two seasons with Central Coast...

Former A-League star Andy Brennan comes out as gay

Andy Brennan left Newcastle Jets in January 2017.

Former A-League footballer Andy Brennan has come out as gay in an interview with the Herald Sun newspaper.

Brennan, who left Newcastle Jets in 2017 and now plays for Green Gully in the NPL Victoria League, said he is looking forward to focusing on football again.

"Six months ago I thought about it a lot, tried to hide it and push it aside because of the way I thought it would be perceived by many," the 26-year-old, who is the first Australian male footballer to come out as gay, said.

"You've got...
