Mexico and Monterrey defender Jesus Gallardo suspended two games for anti-gay slur

Jesus Gallardo helped Monterrey to the 2019 Apertura title last month.

Mexico and Monterrey defender Jesus Gallardo has been suspended for two games by Liga MX for using an anti-gay slur during celebrations of Monterrey's 2019 Apertura title last month in Estadio Azteca.

After Monterrey defeated Club America on penalties to lift the title, Gallardo danced around the pitch after the final whistle and was caught on camera singing an anti-Club America chant with explicit anti-gay overtones.

The league announced an investigation on Jan. 4 and then this week confirmed...

Dorlan Pabon lifts the trophy following Monterrey's Liga MX Apertura final win over Club America.
Monterrey needed penalties to beat America to the Liga MX Apertura title.

MEXICO CITY -- Monterrey head coach Antonio Mohamed spent the early part of Sunday visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe -- dedicated to Mexico's patron saint -- in the north of Mexico City. Mohamed had promised his son Farid, who tragically died in a car crash in Germany in 2006, that he'd one day win the Liga MX championship with Monterrey, something he prayed for on the morning of the second leg of the final against Club America.

After the game had ended 2-1 to America -- and the...

MEXICO CITY -- Leonel Vangioni netted from the spot to win the Liga MX 2019 Apertura for Monterrey 4-2 in a penalty shootout against Club America, after the game finished 2-1 to Las Aguilas following extra-time on Sunday.

Federico Vinas and Richard Sanchez both scored in the first half for America, with Rogelio Funes Mori leveling the aggregate scores at 3-3 in the 75th minute.

Funes Mori's super-strike sets up gigantic second-leg in Liga MX final

Rogelio Funes Mori sets up a bicycle-kick goal that gave Monterrey the advantage in the Liga MX final against Club America.

Monterrey will take a 2-1 lead over Club America into the second leg of the Liga MX 2019 Apertura final on Sunday in Estadio Azteca, after a memorable first leg on Thursday in Estadio BBVA. Here are three takeaways from the match:

1. A goal worthy of winning any game

This was a game that started slowly, with fouls and steel overshadowing flair and scoring opportunities. The majority of the first half seemed to indicate that there would be nothing of lasting note, leaving the real entertainment...
