Liverpool slip but remain in contention in fight for Premier League top four

The Exploding Heads recap the midweek Premier League fixtures.

For the second time in four days, Liverpool were left feeling frustrated with themselves and aggrieved at not getting the rub of the green from a match official.

Wednesday night's goalless stalemate with West Brom came hot on the heels of the 1-1 draw with neighbours Everton and has put a small dent in Liverpool's top four aspirations. Perspective is needed though, as a small dent is all it is and there is no cause for alarm at this stage.

Liverpool were not at their best in their last two games...

Pele pays tribute to Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah after stunning year

ESPN FC's Steve Nicol says he's surprised by Mo Salah's stunning form for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah's incredible 2017 has been recognised with all kinds of awards and accolades, but perhaps his greatest achievement this calendar year has been to receive high praise from arguably the greatest football player that's ever lived.

Indeed, after Salah was named BBC African Footballer of the Year, Pele congratulated the Liverpool forward on the feat.

The Brazilian great also looked ahead to seeing Salah on the World Cup stage in Russia this summer. Egypt qualified for their first World...

Liverpool stars fail to shine, supporting cast comes up short vs. West Brom

Dominic Solanke's goal was disallowed due to a speculative handball as Liverpool drop two more points at home.
Dominic Solanke's goal was disallowed due to a speculative handball as Liverpool drop two more points at home.
Steve Nicol and the ESPN FC crew delve into Liverpool's lack of sharpness after they dropped points for a second consecutive game.
Jurgen Klopp vented frustration in regards to the referee after Liverpool's scoreless draw with West Brom.

Liverpool lacked guile, energy and composure in another disappointing home draw -- this time 0-0 against West Brom -- with another negative side. Momentum has been lost and it will take great character to get it back quickly.

Positives

The hosts' unbeaten run reaches 11 games but there was little else to cheer on a cold, wet Anfield night.

Negatives

If their main stars fail to catch fire all at once, there's little Liverpool's supporting casr can do to rescue the situation. Usually somebody...

On-loan Liverpool striker Divock Origi's horror miss for Wolfsburg vs. Leipzig

Liverpool loanee Divock Origi provides miss of the season contender for Wolfsburg.

Divock Origi managed to produce a rock solid contender in the Miss of the Season award stakes as Wolfsburg hammered out a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Tuesday evening.

With the scoreline level and little over 10 minutes remaining, Origi was presented with a proverbial Christmas gift directly in front of an open goal.

However, the 22-year-old Liverpool loanee squandered the chance and in spectacular style, somehow sending his shot over the crossbar from three yards out.

After tumbling...

Dejan Lovren's raw deal over Everton penalty shows Liverpool trust issues

The ESPN FC crew discuss whether Dejan Lovren was hard done by in the Merseyside derby.

Jurgen Klopp did not take the decision to award Everton a penalty in Sunday's Merseyside derby particularly well. The German was petulant and spiky in his postmatch interviews after Wayne Rooney had taken full advantage of referee Craig Pawson's generosity to steal a point for the Blues in a game in which they rarely ventured outside their own half.

Klopp was genuinely staggered at the number of journalists and pundits who felt the decision was correct and that Dejan Lovren had fouled...
