With the win, Kashima qualified for the last eight of the competition for the first time since 2008 and won a tie in the knockout rounds for the first time since the Asian Champions League was created in 2002.

Matt Simon broke his two-year goal drought to give Sydney FC's disastrous Asian Champions League campaign a lifeline.

The Sky Blues drew 1-1 with Group H leaders Kashima Antlers in Japan on Tuesday night, falling behind to another set piece before a stirring second-half fightback paved the way for Simon's 70th-minute equaliser.

It was the striker's first ACL goal in nine years and one that could yet help the reigning A-League champions return from the brink.

Sydney FC have left themselves with an Asian Champions League mountain to climb after a 2-0 home defeat to J-League powerhouse Kashima Antlers.

The Group H leaders were too much for Sydney, who were left with a single point from three games.

Shoma Doi and Naomichi Ueda scored for Kashima as ex-Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic and his assistant Zeljko Kalac watched from the Allianz Stadium stands on Wednesday night.

The win lifts Kashima to seven points with Sydney hopeful Suwon Bluewings...

Kashima Antlers look dejected at the final whistle.

Kashima Antlers missed a chance to secure their record ninth J-League title on Sunday after being held to a 0-0 draw at home against Kashiwa Reysol.

A win for Antlers would have secured the title with one game remaining.

Kashima are five points clear of second-placed Kawasaki Frontale, who must beat newly crowned Asian Champions League winners Urawa Reds away on Wednesday to keep their own title hopes alive.

Paulinho hero as Guangzhou Evergrande move into ACL quarters

A second-half strike from Paulinho was enough to give Guangzhou Evergrande a place in the last eight of the AFC Champions League, despite a 2-1 second-leg loss at Kashima Antlers in Japan on Tuesday night.

With Guangzhou taking last week's first leg 1-0, the Brazilian international's intervention gave the visitors a vital away goal, and the advantage in this 2-2 aggregate second-round tie.
