ESPN Brazil reporter Debora Gares joins Get Up to provide the latest from Flamengo's training center where a fire killed 10 teens.
A fire on Friday left 10 people dead and three people injured at Flamengo's training centre in Rio de Janeiro.

Brazilian police have charged Flamengo's former president with manslaughter for a fire that killed 10 teenage players in February.

An investigators' report obtained by The Associated Press shows Eduardo Bandeira de Mello and seven others were charged over the fire at the club's training facility.

Mello did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The Rio de Janeiro-based team said it didn't know of the charges.

Flamengo face steep challenge in Ecuador to secure Copa Libertadores progression

On a gloriously sunny afternoon in front of a Maracana stadium packed with fans in their red and black colours, Flamengo beat local rivals Vasco da Gama 2-0 on Sunday in the second leg of the final of the Rio State Championship. This was a repeat of the first-leg scoreline, and so, by a comfortable margin, Flamengo are kings of their own hill, with Rio bragging rights assured.

But there is no time to celebrate. Being champion of Rio de Janeiro is all very well. It is a historic title -- but one which...

Brave Brazilian girl dares to wear away jersey in home crowd at big Rio de Janeiro derby

One image from last Sunday's Rio de Janeiro derby between Fluminense and Flamengo -- otherwise known as "Fla-Flu" -- went viral in Brazil, but it did not come from the pitch. It's a curious image of a little girl in the stands of the Maracana stadium.

The young fan, Lais de Oliveira Nascimento, emerges from a sea of Flamengo supporters proudly wearing Fluminense colours as she sits on the shoulders of her grandfather -- who, by the way, is a Flamengo fan. It's certainly a striking image of...

Flamengo prohibited from using training centre following deadly fire

ESPN Brazil reporter Debora Gares joins Get Up to provide the latest from Flamengo's training center where a fire killed 10 teens.
A fire on Friday left 10 people dead and three people injured at Flamengo's training centre in Rio de Janeiro.

The Flamengo training centre where a fire killed 10 academy players and injured three more earlier this month was shut down by the city of Rio de Janeiro due to a lack of proper fire and safety permits.

A note from the city declaring the action was posted on the gate of the "Ninho do Urubu" facility on Wednesday morning.

"Today it was shut down completely, there was a decision and the city government has complied," Rio de Janeiro mayor Marcelo Crivella said in a statement.

"We expect that all the...

Flamengo must do better to help families, fans heal following tragic fire

ESPN Brazil reporter Debora Gares joins Get Up to provide the latest from Flamengo's training center where a fire killed 10 teens.
A fire on Friday left 10 people dead and three people injured at Flamengo's training centre in Rio de Janeiro.

Last Sunday, Rodolfo Landim, the president of Flamengo, held a media conference to explain the position and conduct of his club in the wake of the fire at their training ground that killed 10 youth players. It was an emergency move, a bid to improve the club's communication after what was widely seen as two extremely poor weeks of post-tragedy administration.

This emphatically is not the scenario Landim envisioned when he took over as president on Dec. 19, 2018.

There were grounds to believe that...
