MEXICO CITY -- Oscar "Conejo" Perez couldn't contain the tears as the crowd inside Estadio Azteca sung his name ahead of his farewell ceremonial appearance on Saturday. The 46-year-old, 1.72-meter goalkeeper made his debut for La Maquina when UB40 was topping the Billboard charts back in 1993 and recently brought to an end a career that saw him establish himself as a legend of the Mexican domestic game.

A goal in each half from Mexico internationals Roberto Alvarado and Elias Hernandez sealed a 2-0 victory for Cruz Azul against Chicago Fire in the first ever Leagues Cup game on Tuesday.

Cruz Azul's Caixinha: Leagues Cup can rival CCL

Brian McBride explains how playing Liga MX teams mid-season in the Leagues Cup will either help or hurt the four MLS teams involved.

Cruz Azul head coach Pedro Caixinha believes the inaugural Leagues Cup between Liga MX and MLS clubs could become stronger than the CONCACAF Champions League and admitted that he once interviewed for a job with Tuesday's quarterfinal opponent Chicago Fire.

"It'll be a competition, I believe, that'll become even stronger than the CONCACAF Champions League could be," said Caixinha ahead of the game in Chicago.

Las Vegas to host Liga MX-MLS Leagues Cup final

ESPN FC's Brian McBride examines LAFC's growth under Bob Bradley and Carlos Vela's evolution as the leader of the team.

The final of the inaugural Leagues Cup that features teams from MLS and Liga MX will be held on Sept. 18 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, the competition announced on Thursday. 

The inaugural cup competition will begin in the United States over July 23 and 24 (watch matches on ESPN and streaming on ESPN+) and see Houston Dynamo face Club America, Real Salt Lake host Tigres, Chicago Fire play Cruz Azul and LA Galaxy take on Club Tijuana. The MLS teams will all play at home.
