Robbie Fowler defends decision to coach in A-League

Now living in Croatia, the former talismanic striker claims football's leadership in Australia has overseen a grave decline in talent development.

Robbie Fowler believes his decision to move to Australia was a gamble that paid off and that his Brisbane Roar side would have been contenders for a third A-League title had the coronavirus outbreak not intervened.

The former England and Liverpool striker only had the experience of the 2011-12 season as player-coach at Thai club Muangthong United on his CV when he took over at the Roar at the start of the season.

A-League set for August 1 restart - sources

A-League players will be back in training on July 1, with the remainder of the season to commence on Aug. 1, sources have told ESPN.

Clubs were informed of the plans late on Friday afternoon (AEST), with five rounds of matches plus a finals series remaining to complete the 2019-20 A-League season.

A condensed A-League season looks set to play out almost entirely in Sydney and Melbourne under a revamped schedule that is close to finalisation.

Wellington Phoenix general manager David Dome gave an insight into the overhauled nature of the league caused by the need to isolate teams and reduce travel because of the coronavirus.

Dome revealed Australia's two biggest cities will be hubs for the remainder of the regular season, which will be completed by mid-April at empty stadiums.
