Transfer Rater: Oblak to Juventus

Simeone deserves some blame for tactics, selections in Atletico's slump

With Atleti still winless after three games in the UCL, Sid Lowe shares his diagnosis for what's causing their struggles.

To regular observers of Atletico Madrid, Wednesday's drab draw with Qarabag will have come as no surprise. This is a side that have scored just 14 goals in 11 games this season -- five of which came away to the out-of-form Las Palmas.

This was something of a nadir. In Diego Simeone's tenure as boss there have been plenty of drab performances, but Atleti have always managed to get the win -- be it from a corner or an individual moment of magic. This time, however, they just looked devoid of inspiration,...

Nico Gaitan, Atletico Madrid lifeless in bore draw against Qarabag

Atletico Madrid were held by 10-man Qarabag FK in Azerbaijan which leaves them in a precarious spot in Group C.

A dismal, dreary display from Atletico Madrid saw them draw 0-0 away to Qarabag. It leaves their hopes of progressing in the Champions League hanging by a thread with no margin for error in the next three games.

Truth be told, it was a non-event with the club's impotence against sides who sit back and defend there for all to see. It is all well and good playing well against sides who let you play your game, but you need to adapt.

The Azeri outfit had a man sent off and even then Los Rojiblancos...

Saul, Jan Oblak sensational, though Atletico settle for draw vs. Barca

Saul's stunning goal was almost enough to give Atletico all three points in a thrilling clash with Barca.

A frenetic, high-octane game between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona ended 1-1 on an entertaining Saturday night in the Spanish capital. Saul Niguez's sumptuous opening goal in the first-half gave Atleti a deserved lead as they looked the better side, despite a number of players on both sides looking slightly nervous and not up to their usual standards.

Yet as has been the case now in both of Atletico's big games at their new Wanda Metropolitano stadium, a late slip-up saw them pegged back by Barcelona's...

Barcelona 100 percent winning record ends but Suarez saves point vs. Atleti

Barcelona's perfect start in La Liga ended at Atletico, but Luis Suarez's late header earned the visitors a draw.
Diego Simeone hails Saul's continued progression as a key contributor for Atletico after their draw with Barcelona.
Ernesto Valverde praises Lionel Messi's hard work for Barcelona at Atletico after a busy week with Argentina.

MADRID -- Three thoughts on Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw with Barcelona in La Liga.

1. Suarez strikes to save Barcelona

Luis Suarez's late header kept Barcelona comfortably top of the Liga table, although Ernesto Valverde's side lost their 100 percent winning record and, for long periods, did not look like potential champions against an Atletico Madrid side still settling into their new home.

Saul Niguez's superb, long-range strike midway through the first half seemed to have set Atletico on the way...

Diego Costa puts in the hard yards in Atletico Madrid training video

Having missed preseason, Diego Costa is now putting in the hard yards ahead of his grand return to the Atletico Madrid first team.

After being informed he was surplus to requirements at Chelsea at the end of last season, Costa went AWOL in August while the Blues negotiated a deal with Atleti, despite the latter being under a transfer embargo.

As such, the 28-year-old striker will remain unavailable for selection until January, by which time the Spanish club intend to have him fit, ready and raring...

Griezmann, Atletico deliver flat performance in bore draw with Leganes

Shaka Hislop tells Alexis Nunes what Diego Costa will bring to Atletico Madrid's game come January.

Atletico Madrid suffered a European hangover, looking impotent and lethargic as they played out a goalless bore draw with local rivals Leganes on Saturday night.

A much-changed Atleti lineup, with several players out of position, raised a few eyebrows pre-kickoff, and the in-game management did little to help that. Truth be told, Los Rojiblancos never looked like scoring, and Jan Oblak saved their blushes in a tepid display.

Not to worry, just undefeated Barcelona to come after the international...
