Asian Cup: India star surpasses Messi with two goals in win vs. Thailand

India's Sunil Chhetri scored twice to help send India top of their Asian Cup group.

Sunil Chhetri overtook Lionel Messi to become the second highest-scoring active international player by netting two goals for India in their 4-1 win over Thailand at the 2019 Asian Cup.

Chhetri moved onto 67 goals, one more than Argentina and Barcelona forward Messi. Only Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is ahead of him -- the Juventus forward has scored 85 international goals.

Anirudh Thapa and Jeje Lalpekhlua also scored for India, who went top of Group A above host nation United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, who drew 1-1 on Saturday.

- India ratings: Chhetri a perfect 10 for India

Earlier on Sunday, defending champions Australia suffered the first shock of the tournament by losing 1-0 to Jordan.

Anas Bani Yaseen was the match-winner for the team ranked 109th in the world, finding space following a short-corner routine by Jordan to guide in a near-post header in the 26th minute and send his nation top of Group B.

- Australia ratings: Maclaren gets 5/10 in shock loss

Syria play Palestine in Group B's other game later on Sunday.

The 2019 edition of the Asian Cup is the biggest ever, with 24 teams involved -- mirroring the expansion made by the European Championship for its most recent tournament in 2016. It is taking place against the backdrop of a diplomatic crisis in the gulf region.
